Akshay Kumar is quite the versatile actor, delighting audiences with his numerous film appearances across a wide range of genres. Bollywood Hungama has just discovered that he's landed the opportunity to star in the remake of the beloved 1993 patriotic film, Tirangaa.

According to a source who spoke to the esteemed daily regarding the dame, Narendra Hirawat of NH Studioz is the proud owner of the rights to Tirangaa. They've made the bold decision to remake the film, recognising its weighty and timely subject matter. With the power of their rights in hand, they wasted no time in putting them to good use.

According to the very same source, it seems that Akshay Kumar was approached for the project and he gave it a green light. He's also been handed the signing amount. But apparently, they are still looking for a director.

According to another source, the film's rights are with Narendra Hirawat, but it seems he doesn't have the rights to the title. The title rights belong to Mehul Kumar, the brilliant mind that produced and directed the original film. Apparently, Kumar is still holding onto the title, and as a result, the film could potentially end up with an altered title.

Bollywood Hungama attempted to contact Narendra Hirawat, but unfortunately, he was not available to provide a comment. When the daily reached out to Mehul Kumar, he stated, “Yes, I have the title rights. I have even registered another title called Mission Tirangaa. But the film rights are with Narendra Hirawat.”

During the very same conversation, he mentioned the following:

“Mr Narendra Hirawat did approach me for the title. I told him that certain landmark films are best not remade. Today, if you remake Tirangaa, people are immediately going to draw comparisons with Nana Patekar and Raaj Kumar. And if the performances are not up to the mark, then people won’t be impressed. I can still understand if they want to remake a forgotten film. But even today, Tirangaa gets viewership. It is shown on television in foreign lands as well. People staying abroad send me pictures of them watching the film!”

He concluded by saying, "Nevertheless, this is just my opinion. It’s up to the rights holder now.”

The original Tirangaa featured an impressive cast including Mamta Kulkarni, Varsha Usgaonkar, and Harish Kumar. This is the tale of a clever brigadier and a sharp-witted cop who join forces to take down a notorious terrorist.

As of right now, on the work front, the Khilaadi of Bollywood will be seen in Khel Khel Mein. Also starring Taapsee Pannu, Vaani Kapoor, Aditya Seal, Ammy Virk, Pragya Jaiswal and Fardeen Khan (in his first film after more than a decade!), the film is stacked with talent!
