Deadpool Recap: Everything You Need To Know About The Film Franchise Before Watching Deadpool & Wolverine

"Deadpool & Wolverine" is almost here, and fans of the Merc With a Mouth are getting antsy to see Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson (Deadpool) cause mayhem onscreen.

Deadpool's newest party has "grown men" in tears, and early reviews have fans giddy with anticipation for the film's "epic" cameos and the "dynamite" chemistry between Reynolds and Jackman. Some have even called the film a "game changer" for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In anticipation of Deadpool & Wolverine's planned universe expansion, we've compiled a rundown of the film franchise's essential plot points, characters, and developments from the first two films. Read on to know more.

Deadpool (2016)

"Deadpool" (2016) introduced viewers to Reynolds' character, Wade Wilson, who is a mercenary and former Special Forces operative. Wade, who has terminal cancer, agrees to undergo an experimental procedure that Francis Freeman, alias Ajax (Ed Skrein), hopes will cure him. On the contrary, it gives him twisted humour, superhuman healing powers, and a horrific disfigurement. In the film's climax, Wade, now known as Deadpool, confronts Freeman on a decommissioned aircraft carrier.

Deadpool is able to defeat Ajax with the assistance of the X-Men's Colossus (Stefan Kapičić) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand). He then reunites with his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) and hopes for a happily ever after, accepting his newfound role as an antihero (hopefully without any disastrous consequences!).

Deadpool 2 (2018)

At the beginning of the 2018 sequel, a terrible thing happens. On their anniversary, no less, the film opens with the terrible death of Vanessa at the hands of a criminal boss. Here, our beloved Merc in his red spandex has to cope with the loss of his girlfriend and the suicidal thoughts and behaviours that accompany it. An encounter with Russell, a young mutant imprisoned at a "Mutant Re-Education Centre," occurs on their first mission after he formally joins the X-Men in remembrance of her legacy. Russell is played by Julian Dennison.

Russell endured psychological and physical abuse at the hands of the headmaster of the school. His plan to assassinate the school's headmaster after he breaks out of the institution brings the time-traveling mutant Cable (Josh Brolin) rushing over.

It turns out that Russell's murder of the headmaster sets the stage for his transformation into a serial killer; as a result, Cable decides to kill Russell in the past to prevent him from killing his family in the future. Deadpool, upon hearing this, embarks on a mission to prevent Russell from taking his first life, thus rescuing Cable's future family and halting his descent into criminality.

X-Force, Deadpool's reformed X-Men team, is led by Cable and, in the film's climax, an epic showdown between Russell and the monster Juggernaut, also played by Reynolds, takes place at the orphanage. By giving his life to save Russell, Deadpool changes the past and ensures that Russell does not turn into a killer. In a subsequent time travel sequence, Cable rescues Wade by rewriting history, and in turn, he ends up creating a new timeline in which Vanessa lives.

Deadpool, Vanessa, and their friends are all together at the end of the film, and Wade has a newfound appreciation for family and sacrifice in a different timeline—one that could lead to encounters with other Marvel comic book characters in the future, setting the stage for the film that is now known as Deadpool & Wolverine.
