In the highly anticipated sequel Mortal Kombat 2, fans will finally get what they've been waiting for - the inclusion of the iconic Mortal Kombat tournament, as per returning star Lewis Tan, who also plays Shatterstar in Deadpool & Wolverine.

It may seem like a daunting task to create a Mortal Kombat movie without the iconic tournament, but the filmmakers managed to pull it off in 2021. However, Lewis Tan, who is reprising his role for the film, has now revealed that the sequel will indeed feature a tournament. In fact, he confidently stated that the second movie will be "100 times better" thanks to the lessons learnt from the first installment. Tan shared this exciting news in a recent conversation with Collider.

Furthermore, Tan, who portrays the formerly washed-up mixed martial arts fighter Cole Young in the franchise, has divulged to the daily that the sequel will be “more ramped up” and showcases a plethora of “wild, crazy nonsense” compared to its relatively mild predecessor.

Check out Lewis Tan's remarks to the officials at Collider below:

“I would say the tone is slightly different. It’s a little more ramped up. Like I said, it's hard to tackle and navigate that storyline because they did it with a new character that's not in the game, right? It’s like, whose story do we tell? How do we tell it? How do we introduce this to the audience of people that maybe don't know Mortal Kombat as well as some of the fans? We tackled that problem in the first movie, and now it’s just off to the races. We can just go for it. So, the second movie has wild, crazy nonsense and is incredible.”

It's no secret that Mortal Kombat 2 will be bringing back the beloved fighter Johnny Cage. Portrayed by the talented Karl Urban, Tan recently hinted that his portrayal might pleasantly surprise fans, thanks to the unique twist that The Boys star plans on putting on the character. In an interview with Screen Rant, he shared the following:

“He's bringing a really interesting take on Johnny Cage. I can't talk about too much, but I can say personally that he's a great guy and we had a lot of fun, a lot of laughs on set ,and I like what he's doing with the character. I think it's really unique, it's maybe different from what people are expecting, but I think he's such good actor. He's been around for a long time, done a lot of great roles, and a lot of great franchises himself. So yeah, he's no stranger to this type of thing, so he's bringing something really special.”

What Have We Learned About Mortal Kombat 2 So Far?

Mortal Kombat 2, directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater, boasts an impressive cast. Lewis Tan takes on the role of Cole Young, while Jessica McNamee portrays Sonya Blade. Ludi Lin will showcase his skills as Liu Kang once again, while Chin Han will captivate the audience once again as Shang Tsung. Joe Taslim takes on the dual role of Bi-Han/Noob Saibot (Who hilariously insists on called Sub-Zero in the first film repeatedly, but to no avail) and Hiroyuki Sanada delivers a memorable performance as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion. Karl Urban joins the cast as Johnny Cage, and Josh Lawson will be seen as the cunning Kano to the screen once again.
