Creature from the Black Lagoon rises again.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Saw and The Conjuring creator James Wan is in early talks to direct a new instalment of the Universal monster franchise.

According to the article, Wan and his team pitched Universal to remake the 1954 monster classic. Along with Wan, a scriptwriter will be hired.

Wan's first film as a director follows Atomic Monster's merger with Blumhouse. Wan spent the last few years on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and wants to return to horror.

According to THR, Wan will produce Creature, with Atomic Monster's Michael Clear and Judson Scott as executive producers.

A prehistoric water-breathing humanoid monster and a group of scientists who want to study him were the subject of the black-and-white 3D film. One of Universal's last great monster films, it introduced audiences to Gill-Man, The Creature, the last of his kind, and mixed horror, tragedy, and romance.

Take a look at the trailer for the original down below:

John Landis tried to revive Creature in the 1980s, while John Carpenter and Ivan Reitman developed takes in the 1990s. Gary Ross took it on in the 2000s to follow his father, Arthur A. Ross, who co-wrote the script with Breck Eisner.

Will Beall wrote the 2010s Universal Dark Universe monster movie featuring the character. The Dark Universe initiative failed as the studio prioritised filmmakers.

Wan's retelling is grounded, modernised, and visceral, while paying homage to the original.
