Depp is back in feature animation, a style that worked well for him in films like Corpse Bride (2005) and Rango (2011).

Depp plays a puffin who lives in a town in the Arctic and wears a hat in Johnny Puff: Secret Mission. He fights the evil Otto von Walrus.

In a video about the movie, Depp says, "I thought it would be fun to make up a language for the character." I thought the only thing left to do was mix my conversation with the sound of a puffin. the final result of Depp's efforts are a sea bird with a red bandana on its head saying things like "Rama-lama-yama." Watch the video below:

Johnny Puff: Secret Mission is a spinoff of the streaming show Puffins, which started in 2020 and is made by Iervolino Entertainment, a Rome-based production company. Depp also sings in Puffins. The movie opens in seven theatres across the U.S. on July 12, but not in New York. On July 17, it will be available on Fandango at Home, iNDEMAND, Dish Network, and DirecTV.
