Alberto Barbera, the director of the prestigious Venice Film Festival, is one of the first few lucky souls who got to see Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie À Deux before everybody else on planet earth. Very recently, Mr. Barbera even went on to rave about the film that he describes as a "Dystopian Musical" ahead of the commencement of the festival on September 7 in an interview with Deadline.

If we are to believe what Mr. Barbera has to say, the sequel is all the more edgier and "darker" than its predecessor that came out in 2019. Now that is music to our ears.

Read on to find out what he had to say while conversing with the officials at Deadline.

DEADLINE: You said this morning that you thought Joker 2 was going to surprise people. I gather the sequel is just as dark, if not more dark, than the first one…

ALBERTO BARBERA: It is. It’s a continuation of the story but the film is completely different from the first film. If you’re expecting the same in terms of violence or other things, you’ll be surprised. When I saw the film in L.A. at the beginning of February there were four or five of us in the screening room, including writer Scott Silver, and we were astonished, our mouths were open at the end of the screening. It is a darker film.

DEADLINE: And it is a musical…

BARBERA: It’s a dystopian musical, or a musical of sorts. I think it’s one of the most daring, brave and creative films in recent American cinema. And I think it really confirms Todd Phillips as one of the most creative directors working at the moment.

Now, picture us dancing with happiness just like how the leading duo of Joker: Folie À Deux can be seen doing at the end of the trailer, which you will find below:

Joker: Folie À Deux is still a little over two months away from gracing our silver screens. The Todd Phillips directorial will see Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as The Clown Prince Of Crime, who will find a companion in Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn. The madness for two, or Folie À Deux, if you will, that is supposed to follow that meeting point will basically be the plot of the film.

The previous film famously got an 8-minute-long standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival itself five years ago. Will the sequel be able to elicit a similar response from the attendees half a decade later? Only time can that question.
