On Saturday night, the charismatic "King Khan" took charge of the Piazza Grande, the stunning big square in the heart of the picturesque Swiss town of Locarno. Shah Rukh Khan, the beloved Bollywood icon, graced the 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival with his presence, where he received the prestigious lifetime achievement award, the Pardo alla Carriera, also known as the Career Leopard.

The fans, both in the 8,000 seats on the square and scattered in different spots around it, erupted with excitement as they showered the star of films like Pathaan, Don 2, and Om Shanti Om with a resounding ovation and thunderous applause. As soon as the big movie screen in the square displayed his arrival on the red carpet at around 9:20 p.m. local time, and his handshake with Locarno artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, the crowd erupted with excitement.

Shortly before 10 p.m., the screen displayed a captivating highlight reel of Khan's films, eliciting a continuous stream of cheers and exuberant reactions from the audience.

In a matter of minutes, the star confidently stepped onto the stage, basking in a symphony of cheers, applause, and adoring screams. He graciously accepted his honorary Golden Leopard award from Nazarro and expressed his gratitude to both him and the evening's host, Sandy Altermatt, who is widely recognised for her contributions as a Swiss TV host.

Check out this clip from that event below:

Khan entertained the audience by humorously describing the weight of the award, eliciting laughter. Despite the scorching weather, he addressed the enthusiastic crowd, expressing his delight to be in Locarno, surrounded by a vibrant community. He felt privileged to be in this stunning, culturally rich, and artistically inclined city, even though the square was packed with people and the heat was intense. With a playful grin, he quipped, “It’s just like being home in India.”

He graciously expressed his gratitude to the audience, remarking, “Ladies and gentlemen, I want to thank you all for welcoming me with such wide arms — wider than the ones I do onscreen.” With arms outstretched, he struck his iconic pose, eliciting a chorus of cheers. And with a charming flourish, he exclaimed, “I love you all.”

On the work front, looks like Khan is all set to start shooting his next film, King, towards the end of this year. Can't wait to see what he has in store for us!

The Sujoy Ghosh directorial is set to showcase the dynamic bond between a father and daughter, played by Suhana Khan. The film promises to be a captivating exploration of the mentor-protege relationship.
