In the next two years, Moana will make a triumphant return to theatres on two separate occasions. This Thanksgiving, theatres will welcome the much-anticipated Moana 2, the direct sequel to the smash animated hit of 2017. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who plays Maui again in the animated film, will also be producing and starring in Disney's live-action Moana feature, which will begin filming this year. Johnson provided an update on Moana's status over the weekend, revealing that filming for the live-action adaptation will commence in August.

You can find the post through which Johnson provided the update below:

Along with Johnson, four more main actors for Disney's live-action Moana film have been named. In place of Auli'i Cravalho, who provided the voice for Moana in both animated features, 17-year-old Catherine Laga'aia of Sydney, Australia will portray the title role. The role of Chief Tui, father of Moana and chief of Motunui, is portrayed by John Tui. Rena Owen will portray Gramma Tala, and Frankie Adams will play Moana's mother Sina.

The man behind Hamilton, Thomas Kail, is helming the live-action adaptation of Moana. The revised screenplay was co-written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, the original writers of Moana. Along with Beau Flynn, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia, Johnson will serve as a producer. Despite his absence from Moana 2, Miranda will compose new music for the live-action film.
