Producer Roy Lee (“The Lego Movie”) revealed on Thursday during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con that Netflix's film adaptation of the iconic video game "Bioshock" with director Francis Lawrence is "reconfigured" to be a "more personal" film with a limited budget.

According to a Variety article, Lee notes that the new government over at Netflix has cut budgets. In line with this, he said they are "doing a much smaller version. Unlike a more grandiose, large-scale project, it will be from a more personal viewpoint. Lawrence still is going to direct the feature.

First revealed as a collaboration between Netflix and the game creators 2K and Take-Two Interactive, the Bioshock film adaptation was announced in February 2022. Released in 2007, the first "Bioshock" game is set in a large underwater city called Rapture, built in the hope to create a utopia but instead has descended into anarchy and violence. The twist-packed story and vivid philosophical perspective of the game captivated players; follow-up games released in 2010 and 2013, the series has sold more than 39 million copies globally.

Since the announcement, though, Dan Lin replaced Scott Stuber as Netflix's film chief, and Lin has refocused the streamer's movie strategy to a more rather modest approach from Stuber's mandate of vast expenditure on a prolific film slate.

Joined by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (“Transformers,” "Deepwater Horizon,") Akiva Goldsman (“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” "I Am Legend,") and moderator Steven Weintraub, Lee was taking part in Collider's Producers on Producers panel. Lee also said that instead of buyouts of potential backend profits, Netflix has changed its compensation plan to a more conventional model of bonuses connected to viewership numbers. He said he had just signed a fresh contract with the streamer for a new project.

Variety quoted Roy Lee saying the following:

"They're modifying it to be a metric comparable to box office bonuses," he said. "This is a chart showing the number of viewers; your compensation in terms of more back end is this. It drives the creators to create a film that attracts a bigger audience"
