Universal is prepared to present filmgoers with the captivating story of pop star Britney Spears' life.

The studio has successfully acquired the rights to the singer's bestselling memoir The Woman in Me, amidst a highly competitive situation. Jon M. Chu, the director of the studio's upcoming two-part Wicked feature adaptation, has been chosen to direct. Marc Platt, known for his work on Wicked and La La Land, has been announced as the producer. This piece of news was first broken by The Hollywood Reporter.

Spears expressed her joy on social media to celebrate the news. The caption of the post in question reads "Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt,” she posted. “He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned.”

The Woman in Me, published by Gallery Books on Oct. 24, 2023, has been incredibly successful, selling 2.5 million copies in the U.S. The audiobook, narrated by Michelle Williams, quickly became the best-selling title in Simon & Schuster's history and was also the top audiobook on Spotify in 2023.

Spears, who was honoured with a Grammy in 2005, rose to fame with her debut single "... Baby One More Time," which was released in 1998 and achieved tremendous success, going platinum 14 times. Aside from a plethora of successful singles, she has also explored the world of acting, showcasing her talent in the 2002 coming-of-age film Crossroads. Additionally, she captivated audiences worldwide with her "Piece of Me" global tour during the summer of 2018. The conservatorship of Spears gained widespread recognition before it was ended in 2021.

Universal aims to maintain its impressive track record with musical biopics. Straight Outta Compton, a film that recounted the journey of rap group N.W.A, achieved a remarkable milestone by grossing over $200 million at the box office. Similarly, 8 Mile, a movie that starred Eminem and incorporated elements from his own life, was honoured with the prestigious Best Song Oscar for its powerful track "Lose Yourself."

The studio is currently working on a biopic of Snoop Dogg and has a jukebox musical of Prince songs in the works, produced by Ryan Coogler. Universal has recently completed production on an untitled musical directed by Michel Gondry. This film draws inspiration from Pharrell Williams' childhood neighbourhood and has Williams on board as a producer.
